GILAD AWOKE IN AN expansive mood. Four hours of sleep had refreshed him, made him mentally alert. His sense of purpose renewed, he managed to put a positive spin to his heretofore failure to secure his as-yet-elusive target.
For once, he had a worthy adversary.
That was good, Gilad told himself again. Positive. This was allowing him to flex his mental muscles. To hone his physical skills. Too many years had passed since heâd come up against a true challenge. His victory would be the sweeter for the challenge.
Not long now.
Gilad took a few minutes to go over his plan and prepare himself. Then he was ready.
Dressed in camouflage pants and matching long-sleeved T-shirt, his face masked in swirls of khaki and taupe and olive, he knew he would become one with the dark landscape. A last check of his weapons and he headed out, away from the plane still hidden by brush and branches.
Stealth served him well. As did silence. The conifers provided him with cover for a distance. Drawing closer and closer, he always kept his goal in sight.
The campfire, its inviting glow a beacon, lured him straight toward his prey.
And a good thing, for there was no moon tonightâit remained hidden in the cloud cover.
Good for him.
Hidden by the last stand of trees, he used the infrared binoculars to make one final check. When he was certain he could move out in safety, he crept into the open and kept low to the ground.
All the while, his gaze roamed the flat, broad area as he searched for anything out of the ordinary. But the same darkness that cloaked him so well enveloped the campsite, as well. He could see only the area directly adjoining the fire.
A pile of kindlingâ¦a discarded containerâ¦the edge of a blanket.
The last being his goal.
But on which side did the woman sleep?
He came from around the back, slowly, silently, so as not to alert them. Her shoes discarded to one side gave her up. Carefully, one weapon at hand, others at the ready in his belt, he snaked forward.
No chances. He was taking no chances. The taste of victory sweetened his tongue.
A yard from the makeshift beds, he hurled the knife with rib-splitting strength. The thunk of the hit into Connolly pleased Gilad as he bent to whip the covering off the Birch woman.
But the blanket stuck as if she were holding on to it. Irritated, he tugged harderâin one broad sweep of his arm, ripping it free. As he glimpsed what lay below, something behind and above him shrieked through the stillness and straight up his spineâwhat looked like an entire tree coming at him!
Gilad bellowed and lunged to the side.
Too late.
One mighty blow felled him.
And all was quiet once more.
